Calm before the storm

The St Moritz Hotel in Cornwall offers soon-to-be-parents one last chance to bid farewell to their self-indulgent days with its Calm Before The Storm package. Janette French reviews for Flying Start

Perfectly situated on the beautiful Cornish coast in Trebetherick, the St Moritz Hotel is the ideal place for expectant couples to escape for one last chance to unwind and relax.

Keen to experience the hotel’s Calm Before The Storm package first hand, our luxurious trip began in style with a first class train journey courtesy of First Great Western to Bodmin Parkway station.

On arrival, we checked into our suite, which boasted striking views of the sea from a balcony that led out from the open plan living area and bedroom. It’s clear to see why the hotel has attracted politicians, film stars, business leaders and writers in its lifetime, all of whom have been drawn not only to the spectacular coast that the St Moritz sits on, but also its high level of service.

The hotel is steeped in history and dates back to the Second World War. The original private house belonged to a couple who reinvented it after the war as a luxurious hotel. Truly international, it was named St Moritz after the owner’s trips to the Swiss town, where he found a commitment matching his for haute cuisine, excellent service and attention to detail.

Once managing to prise ourselves away from the suite’s awesome view, we were shown to the Cowshed spa to indulge in some much-needed pampering. At eight months pregnant, I was in urgent need of relaxation so this is the part of the package that I was most looking forward to. I indulged in two pamper treatments from the menu – Udderly Gorgeous Full Body Massage (£70) and Pedicure (£40) – which lasted 60 minutes each and perfectly accommodated me and my sizeable bump. My husband revelled in having time to unwind himself and opted for the 60-minute Cowshed Massage (£65), which was his first ever massage but by no means his last!

The evening meal served in the hotel restaurant topped off what had been a lovely day at the St Moritz. We enjoyed starters of hand dived scallops with black pudding and golden raisins (£13.50) and confit duck leg with rocket, shallot and aged balsamic (£10), followed by sea bream with shrimp and pancetta risotto (£17.50) and grilled 30-day aged ribeye steak with goose fat chips and sauce diable (£22.50) for the main courses, finished with apple crumble with clotted cream (£7) and a selection of West Country cheese (five for £9.50 or £2.75 per cheese) from the dessert menu. Back when the hotel first opened, the chefs learned their trade in Switzerland and the excellence they brought back saw its reputation soar. This excellence is still evident today in both the quality and presentation of the food.

After a peaceful and comfortable night’s sleep, we made the most of the luxuries on offer and ordered breakfast in bed, followed by a leisurely walk on the beach and afternoon tea. Later, we reluctantly checked out and made the journey back to reality feeling thoroughly revitalised, if not a little nervous at our imminent arrival, Zach, who made his appearance just two weeks later!

A few things:

  • You can upgrade from king / twin room (£125 per person per night based on two sharing) to a suite for an extra £60 per room, per night.
  • To book the The Calm Before The Storm package you can contact the St Moritz Hotel on 01208 862242.

Taking Children to Festivals

festivals 448

Most parents think their festival-going days are behind them when their children are born.  Not being confident can lead to your children missing out on an amazing experience. Festivals can be a fun weekend for parents and children, but there can be dangers if you don’t follow certain steps and precautions. This guide will outline those to make sure everybody enjoys themselves.

Are you sure?
Taking children to a festival will mean certain sacrifices to your experience. There is no point in taking them if these are just going to leave you frustrated. Find yourself a babysitter. Your children will not appreciate being dragged around doing whatever you want to do and then nobody will enjoy their weekend. Remember that young children will be exposed to questionable festival activities (if this is your first festival, be open-minded about what you see, but also extra vigilant) so they will require your attention the entire time.

Which Festival is for you?
Not every festival is suitable for children. The majority of the bigger festivals could be completely inappropriate for them (Glastonbury being the exception). The Leeds and Reading Festivals are a hub of college and university students testing their limits. V Festival is renowned for loutish behaviour. The majority of them have no alternative entertainment to bands. The list goes on. The internet is your best friend when it comes to deciding, but Glastonbury (for its tremendous Kids Stage), Latitude (a poetry stage), WOMAD and Guildford are all brilliant choices and many focus on specific
aspects like fashion or crafts so give it some thought to find the best for you and your child.

What should you take?
You’ve chosen your festival. Brilliant, you probably have a good idea of what you will be doing all weekend. Remember, your child is away from home, so anything that they don’t like being without is particularly essential. Blankets, toys, dummies should not be left behind but having said that, thievery is common at even the most child-friendly festival, so don’t take any items you aren’t prepared to lose. Many festivals also have family fields set aside. Ear defenders are essential to protect your child’s hearing. Perhaps most-
importantly, a potty should not be ruled out. For older children; toilets at festivals can be simply disgusting and many of them will not be prepared to overlook it. It is worth considering a potty even if your child is fully toilet trained. Make a list before you leave to ensure you don’t leave behind any daily essentials. Prepare for all types of weather; that means light coloured clothing as well as
wellies and includes high factor sun cream!

From A to B
Prams are simply not suitable for festival terrain. Attempting to push one across a field will be hugely detrimental to your weekend. People will get in your way and you may get in their way, and your child will see nothing. And that’s if the weather is beautiful – it is even more of an issue if you are attempting to push a pram through mud. Equally, the youngest of children shouldn’t be allowed to roam wherever you like; it could be very easy to lose them (more on that later) and once again, they will not be able to see. Elaine, mother of 2, from London says ‘best thing to use is a ruc-sac baby carrier which provides both safety and an excellent vantage point’. You should also be prepared to have kids on your shoulders for an extended time.

Tracy Morter., Mum of 3, Rage Against the Machine for Christmas No 1 campaigner and photographer at www.tracymorter.com told Flying Start “I used a babyhawk and an ellaroo wrap lightly padded ring sling at V.  I prefer to keep a closer eye on their sleepy head when it gets dark at a festival and easier for feeds.
She continued, “I find babies are easy to take to festivals, slings, boobs and a few nappies and you’re sorted.  My youngest was breastfed watching Radiohead at V! Gets harder when they are older…and heavier when they get tired!  My middle son is autistic so we tend to stick to smaller festivals like our local Brownstock when we take all of them. It can be a little overwhelming but as long as he has space to air guitar he’s happy.  My eldest, who is now 12 has been with just his Dad too.  They went to Sonisphere last year and he absolutely loved it”.

Safety
You will need to do everything you always do when taking your children out. Make sure you know exactly what they are wearing (preferably something unique or especially distinctive). Flying Start recommend you avoid personalised clothing or accessories to prevent stranger danger in case of separation. Give children clear instructions on what to do if they get lost; tell them what the stewards look like and if that fails another parent with children is the best option. You are all in the same boat and other parents will be very helpful on these occasions. The safest thing to do is give your child a copy of your mobile number. You can buy special wristbands for mobile numbers for occasions such as this. Feel free to drink, but don’t binge and don’t leave children unattended, even in their tents. If you have chosen your festival wisely and follow this guide, then in the unlikely event a separation occurs, your child should be in no danger.

Mix it up
One of the issues you can have is finding the right balance between pleasing yourself and your children. This is where the sacrifices mentioned earlier come in. Watching bands is fine, even if they aren’t your child’s favourite band, but refrain from taking them into the heart of the crowd. They will just feel claustrophobic and the noise will likely be too much for them. It is best to arrange your day in sandwiches; what this means is do something your child wants first, then do something you want to do, then finish with something your child wants again and carry on in that vein. This will ensure your child is tolerant of your activities as they always have something to look forward to. A great idea is to play your child some of the music to be showcased at the festival and then they will be familiar to it.

Relax!
Remember that you should be enjoying yourself.
Ideally have another adult with you, which will be essential to you being able to unwind. Have an idea about what you want to do, but don’t set it in stone. Don’t rule anything out. Your children will want to try things you have never tried before so let them lead you and it will lead to a fresh experience.
If you follow this guide and use your common sense along with your natural parenting instincts then you should have a very enjoyable weekend. The festival experience is beyond compare and now your children can be a part of it.

Family Ski Holiday Guide

ski

Organising family ski holidays can be more difficult than expected, but this simple guide should hopefully take away the pain — and if it doesn’t work just let the experts look after you instead.

Igluski specialise in offering the very best ski holidays, from the family friendly chalets of Europe to the tree-lined skiing of North America. Now what may be right for one family won’t work for another, so here are a few tips from them to help put together your perfect winter escape.

Where & When to Ski

There is now more choice than ever when it comes to skiing, and with most families having to ski during the peak school holiday weeks, finding the best value is often top of the list.

But before you jump into the cheapest option or resort you can find, have a look at the full costs, from travel and accommodation, to lift passes and tuition. Skiing has many, not hidden but forgotten costs, and these can sometimes catch you out.

The best weeks for value are often Christmas and Easter, with New Year and February half term offering the most costly weeks of the season. Why not enjoy a ‘white Christmas’ in the snow and if Easter is end of March or early April you can usually enjoy great snow with some spring-time sunshine. Christmas and Easter are also good time for late deals, as people often wait to see what the conditions are like. Saying that if you want to head to Whistler, Val d’Isere or Verbier you need to book early.

Where to Stay

There are some great choices for family skiing now available. Chalets and chalet hotels offer a homely feel and are great when travelling with a large party, especially if you have sole occupancy. Club Med all-inclusive hotels offer a great value and roll all of your holiday needs into one place. And of course for the budget wary, self catered accommodation is rife through the Alps and North America.

If you are travelling with your friends or extended family chalets are fantastic, think sitting around the log fire before having Christmas dinner served and having all the space and privacy for your own family and friends. There are several options from great value, comfortable 3* chalets and tour operators, to super luxury 5*. There’s something for everyone.

If travelling with a smaller group, or just your immediate family, Club Med is one of my favourite options. The price includes all your food, your bar bill, lifts passes, group ski lessons and childcare. The hotels also have their own hire shops and offer very good pre-bookable rates. Lift passes, lessons and childcare can often add up to £500 per person on a holiday, so having this included is a winner. Through in some great food, often ski-in locations, top resorts and French entertainment, and you are looking at a great week on the slopes.

When to Book

This is more difficult and is definitely a balancing act, depending on the week. If you want a top resort, hotel or chalet, you have to book early, and if travelling over New Year or half term, I would advise booking during the summer. The early booking deals during these weeks often outweigh the last minute prices, and these are often the first weeks of the season to sell out.

As mentioned earlier for Christmas week and Easter you can leave it later. If you have a large party or have specific needs then take a good look at the summer deals first. If you are more flexible or a smaller group then booking a late deal can often help you find great value and great snow, though this is also a risky option as the best resorts, flights and properties will go earlier.

All-in-all, family skiing should be fun, consider your families needs before you decide where to go, there’s no point forking out for Val d’Isere or Verbier if you are new to skiing, and Les Gets or Valmorel may not offer enough variety for the hardcore among us. Take your time and weigh up all the costs, consider the in resort prices, the all-inclusive packages and the pre-bookable extras at the very beginning.

Then once you’ve booked, just go and have some fun in the snow.

These bloggers have been chosen by the public as the best mummy and daddy bloggers in their field and I am already excited to see the results at the awards ceremony in September. Although being a parent is a great blessing, it can, at times, prove to be a challenge and as a result many parents seek a sense of support and guidance from these blogs.”

She continued,

The support, humour and friendships that these bloggers so freely offer are what landed them in the final. This is the second annual MAD blogs awards and I am confident that it will be an awards ceremony that continues to grow in popularity.”

New Gender-Free Children’s Clothing Collection

Tootsa MacGinty Flying Start Magazine

Have a look at the “Tootsa MacGinty” catalogue and you’ll notice something unusual – all their clothes (apart from a few dresses) are unisex. For boys or girls. And they’re not just colourful and fun, they’re excellent quality and hard-wearing too. Which means that once your little one has sprouted, you can keep their clothes for the next one…or pass them along to other tiny friends and family.

Kate Pietrasik, the designer, has very strong opinions about her clothes. After working in fashion in Australia and France, she moved back to the UK last year with her baby daughter, and was shocked by the stark gendering of children’s clothes – sludgy colours and camouflage for boys, glitzy princess themes for girls, dubious slogans the little wearers couldn’t even read.

Kate was determined to create an affordable label that offered an alternative.

“I believe our world is filled with colour, and everything is a possibility,” she says, “children like colour, they have big imaginations, they enjoy pretending, they love to dream and for them the world is full of possibilities. I don’t intend to limit their imaginations or make their world smaller by putting them in a sea of pinks and blues, or clothes that look like they were meant for adults.”

We think many parents will agree!

As a result, Tootsa MacGinty’s first collection for Autumn – Winter 2011 is a riot of rainbow colour. A gender-free selection of beautifully designed, well-made clothes for children on the go. Rather than follow the trend for fast moving, celebrity driven disposable fashion,   Tootsa MacGinty’s timeless styles are built to wash, wear and “hand-me-down”.

That means less of an impact on the environment and your pocket!

Prices start at £18 for soft, washed, woven striped cotton T-shirts, £26 for stylish denim and £32 for wonderfully soft, guaranteed itch free cotton and wool mix jacquard knits.

Each item comes washed and every colourway is uniquely identified with its own animal applique or embroidery. Puffins, foxes, hedgehogs, owls and badgers children will love.

Flying Start says, “We love this simple, yet colourful unisex fashion collection and like the idea of mix and match combinations for twins and also for handing down to new brothers or sisters, as this range is designed with quality to last. Not only that, but the prices are great too!”

Tootsa MacGinty will brighten even the darkest winter day. Visit www.tootsamacginty.com

Rescue Oil in ‘Loose Women’ Goody Bags

Rescue Oil Flying Start Parenting Magazine

A host of top celebrities appearing on leading ITV daytime show, Loose Women, could soon become devotees of a product that has wowed beauty and grooming-conscious consumers nationwide – if they delve into their goody bag!

This orange-coloured oil has rapidly become a must-have product in the bathroom cabinets of those who have seen amazing results when treating blemishes, scarring, stretch marks, open pores and signs of ageing.

Now, it could potentially become a darling product for celebrities such as pop princess Nicole Scherzinger, Gok Wan, Patsy Palmer, Jackie Collins, Gavin and Stacey actress, Joanna Page, Cheri Lunghi, Michael Ball, Michael Flatley and Wonderland, who are all booked to appear on the show.

All could use it for general skincare conditioning, whilst some – including the male celebrities – might want to use it for stretch marks, as it is a lesser known fact that men get stretch marks too, particularly if they body-build.

Rescue Oil is non-greasy and easily-absorbed and contains Vitamin E, Evening Primrose oil, Almond oil and Peach Kernal oil.  It soothes and improves the skin’s appearance and, by applying it regularly to stretch marks or scars, the user can restore the skin’s natural moisture balance and rejuvenate and smooth out sagging skin and wrinkles.

Its manufacturer and supplier, Healthpoint Limited, which has just launched a new website for Rescue Oil at www.rescueoil.co.uk due to its popularity, is delighted to have the beauty gem selected for the Loose Women goody bags.

Healthpoint director, Bob Seddon, says: “We are thrilled and think it’s ironic that Gok Wan, of ‘How To Look Good Naked’ fame is one of the recipients, as our product helps woman with stretch marks be less bashful in a bikini!  If any of the celebrities want more of the product once they’ve tried it, we’d be happy to send it to them”.

Rescue Oil comes in three different bottle sizes and can be bought on the high street at retailers such as Savers, Bodycare, 99p Stores, Home Bargains, Wilkinson, Poundworld, B&M Bargains and Poundland, at Morrisons supermarkets and from independent pharmacies, or online at Amazon, Ebay or www.mindandbodysolutions.co.uk It ranges in price from £0.99 to £2.49, despite providing all the product benefits of competitive products priced at up to ten times more.
