Safeguard Your Whole Family

safewater alarms

Everyone will agree that child safety is paramount but no matter how well you look after your child, it only takes an instant for him or her to be out of sight and potentially in danger. Safewater Alarms have introduced a range of safety devices to cut down the risk to children in the house, garden, nursery or at school. We spoke with director Paul McHugh to find out more.

Paul said “We’re a family run business that really takes child safety around the home very seriously. We identified some of the main dangers to children around the home and garden and set out to find products that will really reduce the risks. We are different from many companies who sell safety products because we ensure each one is tried and tested and our staff know how each product works. We also try to educate our customers by providing information on child safety and protection on our web site and blog at www.safewateralarms.co.uk

Safewater Alarms was created in 2005 with the intention of addressing certain high risk areas to children. Accidents occur when children wander off and are unseen, even for a split second, and Safewater Alarms provide a number of wireless alarms to give parents and carers remote warning of possible danger.

Each year there are many children who sadly die in garden ponds and swimming pools and Safewater Alarms set out to reduce that risk by supplying the Poolguard. A simple battery operated device that sounds an alarm in the house if anything of similar size to a 1-year-old child should access the water.

The Safety Turtle is a wristband device that senses water when submerged. With a range of 60 – 120 metres line of sight and the option of a number of base stations, it is an effective protector. As an added security, the Safety Turtle Gate Alarm can be attached to access gates to pools or even driveway gates and will sound if a child manages to unlatch the gate.

Young children have a great skill at evading the attention of mums and dads and before you know it they are out of sight. Safewater Alarms promote the Lostme Foundme, a valuable twin function wristband device with remote monitor that sounds the alarm as soon as the child goes further than a pre-prescribed distance. If the child is still in vision the monitor can be reset. However, if the child is not in sight,  you can switch the receiver to the locate function and set the distance to maximum, the alarm will stop but when you start getting closer to your child the fob will start bleeping again.

Paul said “Safewater Alarms is selling this product because it is simple but effective, it is British designed and has been tested in the UK. The transmitters are well designed and half the battle is won if your child is happy to wear the product.”

Safewater Alarms products don’t just cater for children though as pets can easily get into similar trouble and there are a number of products designed to rescue your pet from ponds and pools from an adadpted Safety Turtle to the Skamper Ramp.

Paul says “We are going to try to educate mothers and fathers on the dangers that garden ponds, swimming pools and all forms of water can bring to their loved ones. If our products help save just one life then Safewater Alarms is a worthwhile company to own.

Mahatma Gandhi once said Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

SiR – Promoting Education and Prosperity Around the Globe

sirlogo

SiR Learning is a well established company in the Integrated Learning Systems field but not many will know that SiR is also highly active in facilitating learning for under privileged children in developing countries. Flying Start spoke to Managing Director Nick West about both SiR Learning and the West Family Charitable Trust.

The current SiR Learning is the product of Global Learning Systems (founded in 1983) and Systems Integrated Research who merged in 1994. The company’s philosophy is to enhance classroom learning and improve educational standards by providing individuals with IT that gives them the chance to learn at their own level. They believe that IT is for lifelong learning in both classroom and at home.

Using the current National Curriculum paperbased activities, SiR have developed a number of software products such as Global Maths, Complete Maths Workshop, The Active Books series, Global English and a host of others for primary, secondary and further education. SiR doesn’t stop there though as they realised that there is also a need to provide management software to evaluate the effectiveness of these teaching aids. As a result, Nick and his team developed several items that support lesson planning, pupil monitoring and marking and also reporting.

Training for teachers in the use of both course software and management, with options for on-site (either in the school or at SiR) courses, video conferencing or separate venues is also catered for. There is even a help desk for day-to-day support.

SiR Learning have had proven results. Their web site holds 14 case studies (www.sirlearningsystems.co.uk/content/casestudies) but a greater testimony is the fact that over 400 schools currently use their products. Whilst many schools find it too expensive to pay for annual operating licenses, SiR ensured that their software comes with a permanent licence thus reducing costs significantly.

SiR Learning is not the only concern of Nick and his family however. They are also trustees for the West Family Charitable Trust, an organisation that is looking to work to eradicate poverty by using education as a path to recovery.

The trust was set up by Nick’s aunt Daisy Mary West in 2001 and is now run by her three nephews. The trust is currently applying its resources to a project in the Philippines, so recently devastated by a cyclone in 2011, known as the Buddy Network.

The Buddy Network uses school representatives, teachers, retired teachers and voluntary teachers to deliver a “4-Tier Learner Support Programme” which consists of learning materials, lesson plans, marking and the tracking of learner progress.

By supplying these mentors with recycled laptops and solar panels, they are able to reach areas of the islands where children are isolated and provide much needed teaching and encouragement in English, Maths and Science using SiR’s own software. In the short term, the aim is to support the out of school youth and underachievers whilst encouraging them to re-enter mainstream education.

The long term aim of the West Family Charitable Trust is to stimulate the Philippine economy by helping to create an educated workforce attractive to new investors who will provide jobs so that the economic growth of the islands can be boosted. This also means that more families move out of the poverty trap and the cycle becomes self-sustaining.

This is not just about sending money. This is a scaleable project which, as it grows from individual villages to a national level, is about self help and producing an educated generation that is increasingly employable. Working in tandem with the European Chamber of Commerce it is hoped to stimulate new investment in the Philippines to try to replace the devastating losses of 2011 and to give even more opportunities for the future.

Isossy

isossy

Nearly 20 years ago Amanda Rabor was selling contemporized African influenced clothing, jewellery and cushions on Camden Market with her sister and friend. Flying Start explores how her talent for fashion is still going strong in 2012 with the pioneering Isossy Children’s wear label.

Once you enter the Isossy world, you will be hooked. More to the point, so will your children!
This fantastic range of contemporary designed fashion will inspire your children to develop their own identity and individuality with a magnificent choice of vibrant colours influenced by Africa and Asia.

Items from Isossy are limited editions with anything between 10-100 pieces of any one print, so your children can feel special and stand out from the crowd.

So how did the Isossy label begin?

Amanda Rabor has always been passionate about creating children’s clothing and designing unusual pieces.  Her past experiences working on Camden Market and with a small business Culture Kids were her learning ground and build up to the Isossy concept. Amanda says “The experience of doing Culture Kidz was invaluable to me. I had a lot of support and I learnt the basics”. Amanda’s global perspective comes from her Nigerian father and Trinidadian mother who raised the family internationally in NYC and later London.

Amanda describes the style of her designs in three diverse collections. Isossy play is easy, casual, playful daywear. Isossy Classic is ladylike, formal, classic, ‘little ladies who lunch!’ and Isossy Occasions is for more formal occasions such as weddings, first communions and parties.

Isossy have had plenty of coverage in the press, featuring exclusively in magazines such as Close Up, You, Ankora and New African Woman.

Kiss Training Provides Interactive and Informative Training Without all the Unnecessary Stuff

Kiss Training was established in December 2007 by Pete Haines following the unforeseen closure of the training company he was working for. Haines was able to continue to utilise his skills, qualifications and passion in health and safety, by providing training in first aid, outdoor/wilderness first aid, health and safety, fire and risk assessment.

With more than 15 years experience in providing such courses, Kiss Training specialises in providing a high standard of training throughout the UK, which is taught in a productive and enjoyable way. “Our goal is to provide a superior level of health and safety training to all our customers while avoiding unnecessary complexity and jargon within the course content,” said Haines.

Kiss Training is fully qualified to deliver HSE approved courses and its first aid courses provide clients with the skills and knowledge to safely assess situations and when necessary provide immediate first aid. Haines has also received requests to teach wilderness first aid to expedition companies in overseas in Europe, something that he cites as a “significant moment” for the company.

Although business has grown since the company’s inception, Haines still remains a sole trader with freelance trainers as and when required, who can either visit a client’s place of work or arrange off-site venues. And because not all companies work from 9am-5pm, Kiss can deliver courses to fit around various shift patterns.

The health and safety sector is constantly experiencing change, but with new updates and recommendations Haines ensures that his company is kept fully up-to-date with the recommendations and incorporates them into the training.

Haines has also witnessed a change due to economic downturn. “Training is not always the main priority and companies are only requesting training for the essential requirements,” he stated.

However plans for the future include expansion and continued growth for the business, particularly within the wilderness sector and the schools/nurseries sector, which currently accounts for approximately 20 per cent of Kiss Training’s business.

Taking care of your families problem skin and more…

Untitled-1

Over the last 20 years there has been a significant increase in skin related problems ranging from eczema to sensitivities. Pure and Gentle have developed an all round approach to dealing with the causes and symptoms of skin conditions and Flying Start spoke to co-founder Lisa Clunie, about the rise of Pure and Gentle and their approach to the numerous problems that customers contact them with.

Personal experience within her own family and her own sensitive skin gave her the knowledge of what skin problems are like to live with and how it affects your life. Lisa became very frustrated at not being able to find information and naturally based products or creams designed for specific skin conditions easily. After a number of conversations with friends it became obvious that she wasn’t alone and that there were a large number of people of all ages who suffered from a variety of skin problems which ranged from allergies to cancer, psoriasis to eczema and many more. Knowledge of the problems was only the first cog in the wheel, and after a lot of research she discovered the availability of numerous natural products to treat these conditions that had never made it to the High Street shelves.

In 2007 Pure and Gentle was launched and now concentrates on providing products for the relief of skin conditions and also on a number of other related areas backed up with research and information. Firstly, Pure and Gentle listen to their customers. Lisa believes this to be one of the most important aspects of the business. As a result they are in the process of constructing a directory of skin diseases for customers to access that will give information on each disease in plain English.

Pure and Gentle have developed the business to include a team of professionals who undertake research on skin problems and produce informative articles and information. They are looking to provide knowledge on how looking after your general health can help skin care in terms of nutrition and environment and they now have a large number of tips and advice for anyone, whatever condition their skin is in. Their research has led into a number of alternative areas that benefit from natural products, which include ranges for skin, hair and personal care for people with sensitivities. These are products known to be free from toxins and skin irritants that have been sourced from around the world and many have clinical trials and research behind them.

Pure and Gentle tests all of its products, not in some laboratory or by relying on manufacturer’s results but with family, friends and ordinary members of the public, many with skin complaints, and getting first hand feedback on each product before it appears on the site.

Lisa stated,  “Our customers are our future and because we want to give them the best products and information we list all of the ingredients so you know what you are buying. We also list whether the products are vegan friendly, fair trade and soil association registered. As a result of customer feedback we are now providing product samples for them to try as we know this is so important for people with skin problems. We have also started a new party plan based business, PureandGentle@Home, where consultants can take products into homes to demonstrate them – another exciting development that we will progress in 2012. We have plans to grow the business but still ensure we continue to find the best products out there whilst providing up-to-the-minute information and articles.

You can find out more about Pure and Gentle and access more information at www.pureandgentle.com or email marketing@pureandgentleskincare.com or call  0870 042 2302 Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.30pm
